Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC)

  • EPIC’s 15,000-square-foot facility houses a computer-aided design (CAD) studio, demonstration areas, materials testing, and project management software to give you hands-on design, prototyping, and small-scale manufacturing experience
  • EPIC is located in the heart of campus as a center for innovation, not only for engineering students, but for students in all of BU’s schools and colleges.
  • BU is ranked #20 for most innovative schools by the US News & World Report.
  • Learn the entire product innovation process – from concept to design to production to deployment – in a global environment
  • BU’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by the building’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification status

ANDREW CHALIFAUX: Hi, everyone. I'm AJ Chalifaux. I'm a mechanical engineering student here at Boston University. We are standing outside of the Engineering Product Innovation Center, which is where I spend most of my time. And if you want, we'll go inside and take a look.

So here at the Engineering Product Innovation Center a Boston University, or EPIC, as it's otherwise known, we work on both designing parts and learning how to manufacture them in a realistic environment. For instance, very recently, some members of the Boston University rocket team were in here designing and working to manufacture some nozzles for their rockets. This state of the art facility was constructed in the center of Boston University's campus to showcase its importance not only to the college of engineering, but to Boston University as a whole.

Here we are in the main floor of EPIC, where students can really come and get hands-on with the machinery and work on their projects. And one of the cool things about this is that it's open to any student across Boston University. So a lot of school of business students come in here. A lot of college of fine arts students come in here and work on different projects. All we ask is that you wear your safety glasses.

These are some of my favorite machines at EPIC, the 3D printers. And while some students like to use them to make more serious prototypes of their parts, sometimes it's nice just to use them for fun.

Thanks for letting me show you around one of my favorite places on campus. And when you plan to stop at Boston University, make sure you come here to the Engineering Product Innovation Center. Can't wait to see you guys.
